Best Flooring for Florida's Humidity

Florida has one of the most demanding climates for flooring in the country — high humidity year-round, intense summer heat, and in coastal areas, salt air. What works in Minnesota often fails in Florida. Here's what actually performs in Central Florida homes.

Flooring Performance in Florida

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Excellent

Completely waterproof, dimensionally stable, comfortable underfoot. The best all-around choice for Florida homes — especially on slab construction. No humidity concerns with quality LVP.

Porcelain Tile

Excellent

Completely impervious to moisture — the original Florida-proof flooring. Stays cool underfoot in summer. Some homeowners find it too hard/cold; area rugs can address this.

Ceramic Tile

Very Good

Slightly more porous than porcelain but still excellent for interior use. Not recommended for outdoor or wet areas in Florida — use porcelain there.

Engineered Hardwood

Good

Better humidity resistance than solid hardwood due to plywood core. Works well in climate-controlled homes. Not recommended for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or poorly ventilated areas.

Solid Hardwood

Fair

Can perform well in well-conditioned homes that maintain stable humidity. Problematic in homes where AC shuts off seasonally, or in humid areas like garages and sunrooms.

Carpet

Fair

Works fine in bedrooms and stairs with good ventilation. Problematic in poorly ventilated rooms, bathrooms, laundry areas, or homes with pets and high moisture exposure.

Laminate

Poor

The core of most laminate is HDF (high-density fiberboard) which swells when wet. Avoid in Florida — LVP provides the same look at similar cost with none of the moisture risk.
